Can someone please tell me if these tomato plants look ok or not. Grown from seeds myself, them planted into two grow bags one on top of other. Bottomless plant pots to help with watering. Been in bags about six weeks now but as you can see a mixture of results some growing some trying to and some doing nothing. Or is it just me being impatient.

Are they all the same variety?

IMO Far to wet, green growth on top of compost. This will prevent the roots from forming properly and stunt growth.

To me they look a bit leggy - quite a distance between leaf joints - you will only get a couple of trusses then they will hit the greenhouse roof. It looks like they have had a growth check - possibly a little too dark for them as seedlings? What variety are they? Have you got drainage holes in the growbag - toms don't like wet feet although they are greedy feeders.

For comparison here is a pic of three "Moneymaker" which were sown as seeds on 1st April and planted in the growbag 2 weeks ago.

They are approx 12" high and are already on the second set of flowers.

It's not too late to rescue yours, but maybe buy a couple of plants from a garden centre as backup/comparison to see if it's your growing conditions or method.

What to do to rescue them? make sure that they are drained - cut a hole in the top of the growbag and really feel the compost to see if it's wet - it should be just moist. If it's soaking you need to stop watering immediately - cut some slits in the bag sides 1" from the ground and cross your fingers.

They are moneymakers. I'll slit some holes in bottom of bags, I'm away for a few days now so should I just leave them till I get back before watering again?. Will buy a couple of back up ones. Am growing some in hanging baskets which seem to be ok.

Check to see how wet they are Guy, if they are soaking just slit the bags and leave them - they will survive a couple of days as long as there is sufficient ventilation in the greenhouse if we get a scorching weekend.

I would just put some holes in the bottom of the bags and then leave it till your return.

When you get back see what you have post a pic or two and we may be able to help further.

Thanks for all your help. Boating on the Thames for a few days let's hope they are ok when I get back.
