  • Garlic and onions in trays???

Hi all, I've got some garlic and onion sets which desperately need to go into my plot, however due to work I'm not going to get the chance until the new year. I've read before that you can always get these going in pots of compost and then get them into the ground in early spring. My question is this, would I be OK starting them all off in trays of compost as I don't have enough pots or compost, that way I could easily get 12-15 sets in each tray. Hope this all makes sense and thanks in advance for any help.

Mine are in vending machine cups that are standing in 15 modules per tray see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSQ6NCFZ_RY They have come on a way since the video and they are now touching the tray above and don't appear to be slowing down - So I've had a move around and the slower onions are now on the second level and the faster are on the top row.

Using trays I would be worried about root damage when transplanting where as with small pots you can just knock them out as a unit.

I've tried them in trays before, and as has been said, the roots all get entangled and you lose the advantage of starting them early as they get checked when planting.

2 seconds after posting the above I suddenly had a thought about the roots getting tangled and will instead use some modules.
