    No expense spared here

2 sticks and a ball of string.

Tie string to one stick but only wrap round the other to secure(so it stays on the ball of string)

Looks nice, but to be honest two stout sticks and some string will do the job!

Mark I'd put that on your Christmas/birthday list and until then use something home-made but that's me being tight.

Edited to say here's an older thread from 09' to 2014 :-

I would go with the sticks and string and save my money for more seeds!

I use a garden can around the length of my beds make a dent - draw out to the depth a sow.

I tried string but being clumsy I end up getting tangled.

I have a nice wind-up victorian style line-reel. I used to have a stick, but I found it a pain to reel back in; I used an orbital pattern to get more string per revolution, but then if one strand slipped the whole ball would become a mess. A decent reel is far more important if you have long lines to set - I use mine for over 100M of hedge, so reeling it back in is a proper sized job For something 10-20M then a more Boy's Own solution is probably fine.

Definitely wouldn't buy the one in your link because:

Reel very small diameter, far too many turns to reel in the string
No "locking peg" to stop it unreeling when stuck in the ground
Couldn't see a "winding back in" handle??

A description of mine is in the post referred to earlier, here's a direct link

We have raised beds so only 3' wide and therefore not too difficult to line up against the edging by eye, so I just use a healthy dose of OCD....

My beds are all 4ft wide & I have 2 bits of wood with 4inch and 6inch spacings marked on them & allowing for some space at the bed's sides. Works for most things and I can figure out spacings for the few crops that need something slightly different.

I use a length of red washing line wrapped onto two stakes or a straight piece of wood.

I have a couple of bits of batten marked up like that too. I have one piece 4' long, for across-the-bed, and another the longest I could buy - 8' perhaps? maybe more? The long one gives me a good-enough line offset from the edge of the bed, just as you have described.

I used a saw to mark them, so I don't lose the marks - the batten is pretty muddy now!! - and I did a small second saw mark at the foot-intervals, so I could tell which was a foot and which was some-inches

                              One stick.
