  • Frost damage to spuds despite covering!!!

    Hi
Had covered the spuds in my raised bed with big cardboard sheets and went to uncover this morning to find that the frost seems to have still got through Some leaves were frozen so I poured a watering can of water over them to try and thaw. This evening several are blackened. This evening I have covered them with a sheet as well as cardboard on top Will I lost the plants??

I dunno SR, but I have the same problem I fleeced mine, but the shoot tips that were through have still been caught. I guess only time will tell if it's a fatal blow

Oh don't say that Fi!! Just don't understand how it got under/through cardboard. They weren't flimsy bits of cardboard either!

SNAP!! Don't understand it either. The spuds in tubs have foliage that must be at least 2 feet off the ground, covered with thick fleece. The sides shoots are fine, the top shoots are showing signs of darkening and wilting on some.
This when we had it relatively mild too.
The runner beans which are in the same area but at right angles to it, were covered in much thinner fleece and seem to have escaped damage. Have made sure it's all covered again tonight though even though our temp. is only forecast to be 2 and not minus. Fingers crossed.
I WANT SOME WARM SUNSHINE PLEASE (this cold is hurting my hands)

Metcheck is always quite pessimistic, they've been quoting about 6 deg lower than BBC for round here all week. Think I'll still cover but am not sure we've been frosted this week in the garden and have still to check the plot (that treat is for tomorrow night )

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Metcheck predicted frost correctly for here this morning, but agree they have been a little over cautious this week

Birdbath frozen over this morning. Geraniums I forgot to cover were fine, the potatoes I covered are showing signs of frost but luckily not too bad. I have earthed up some more and have covered over with some weed suppressant fabric as I have the fleece over other stuff. Hope that will do the job.

Checked mine on allotment after work all O.K. Have been earthed up three times never put any cover over so am hoping will be ok tonight. There are parts of the allotment caught last night. Have first toms just starting to form on Caro Rich. These will need to go outside end of next week when I go away. Will have to take a chance.

I have had this before and have posted about it somewhere else. I believe you should get the fleece off the potatoes/plants to give protection.
I don't know about the cardboard though.
Metcheck say -3 here, I expect about -3,-4, or -5, temperature is so dependant on your very local area, no way can one postcode wide forecast get it right for everyone.

For once I'm actually quite happy my spuds are only quite small still !

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I would be a perfectionist, but I dont have the time

metcheck saying -3 here tonight, every other site says 3-4C...

Still going to go cover up with some new paper, despite them being in a shed.
