I grow bulb fennel with the aliums... don't know if that's definitely correct though.pjh75

I grow florence (bulb) fennel with beetroot etc. I sow in June in loo roll middles(cut in half) then plant out the whole thing once it's got going.S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig

Thanks I will try alongside beetroot. I meant the bulb type incidentally. I haven't grown it in modules before as I always thought it hated disturbance.Comment

Hmm.... I was told fennel is a devil to grow, constantly bolting etc, so didnt bother

I have grown fennel before quite successfully though keeping it watered is key as yes it bolts fairly easily. As it is good in salads and cooked,its dual purpose makes it a useful veg. Worth a try northepaul.Comment

The latest GYO mag (June issue) has an article about fennel. It advises sowing fennel in late June to avoid bolting, and also lists some bolt-resistant varietiesComment
