Smells see to plug you directly into memories from long ago, as Proust wrote about for one.

Today I brushed against the foliage on some tomato plants and I remembered being a small boy in my Uncle's greenhouse over 50 years ago - the other one which brings back memories for me is freshly mown grass - almost worth having a lawn just for the smell :-)

Mint from my Granddad's allotment. We'd pick it on Sunday morning and it was my job to sell bunches of it to the neighbours who were having roast lamb for dinner. 6d a bunch in old money.

I'd also have to "sell" bunches of flowers - mainly Marguerites. They didn't smell so nice.
