  • Epsom Salts

Heard a bit of chat about the use of Epsom Salts on the plot the other day.

Can anyone fill me in on what it is used for and is it worth popping to the chemist to get some!

It's usually used in the garden for curing a magnesium deficiency - generally in tomatoes, but also roses, spuds and other things. You can get yellowing of the leaves which is sorted out by a good watering with epsom salts in the water. As to whether it's worth rushing out - I wouldn't. I've never needed it in 40 years of gardening. I suspect it will depend on our soil type as to whether you'll ever need it.
