  • Easiest veg to grow, why does veg bolt

    Hi all,

I'm not a complete novice when it comes to growing veg, I have been growing salads and herbs for a while but am trying to get into growing veg. What is the easiest veg to grow in terms of high yield and low maintenance, no pests etc and also what varieties.

If possible could you seperate the answer into best for containers and also best for plots.

Also why does veg bolt if planted too close together, I'm just curious to find out what causes plants to do this, what is the purpose?

    Many thanks in advance.

Beans - very few pests apart from the beans near the ground that get nibbled.

Almost all veg has some issues; look on the 'what aren't I growing next year' thread at people's issues with veg these last few years......many of the answers depend on your soil and area........after all, it is food that you are growing.

There is also a container growing thread that you might want to look at.

The best thing to do is to try some and see.

A plant bolts when it is under stress, or when it wants to go to seed. That is what bolting is ... throwing up a flower, which turns to seed, which creates the next generation.
