  • "Early Purple Wight" garlic

Just found some of this at a decent ( well more decent) price, 30 odd cloves for £4 and a bit which seems really good value compared to the bigger companies.
Trouble is im reading that you need to use it pretty soon after harvest as it doesnt dtore very well, so even with my love for the stuff i cant see 30 of these plants being used lolz.

Anyone out there have experience of it and what exactly does " doesnt store very well" actually mean in real terms ?

Reason for thoughts of buying is it is ready in may, but with the other strains not far behind, is it pretty pointless ?

Mine lasts til about xmas before it starts sprouting - if that's any help.

My storage system is very sophisticated though! - the bulbs are thrown on the kitchen shelf and left to get on with it

The others don't seem to last much longer before doing the same to be honest............

That's about right. If come Xmas you have more than you can eat you can mince it up and store in white wine vinegar in the fridge. During cooking, the small amount of vinegar burns of and you can't taste it. Fine in oil/vinegar salad dressings too.

May not be as good a deal as it sounds, they are assuming thats 10 cloves per bulb. I cant every remember getting 10 good sized cloves from one bulb. With garlic I believe you get a much bigger bulb if you plant decent size clove....my opinion only as I am by no means an expert

No me neither gl, but t&m are 2 pound more for just 2 bulbs , here you get three bulbs so im guessing its not too bad.
Scroll down the page and it says hey give 12 to cover damage ?, so thats 36 ?.

ive ordered some anyway so ill report back when they arrive.

I've grown this variety and wasn't that impressed, it wasn't as early as advertised for me (ready around the end of June from a November planting) and the bulbs were on the small size. Storage was fine, not noticeably shorter than other varieties.

Did you feed them trix? Mine had onion rot but the bulbs that were lifted were pretty big. I planted out mid Oct.

Just with worm casts/liquid from my worm farm, but my Provence Wight bulbs grown at the same time were about twice the size.

they look like the same ones I buy bigger packs in asda. I pull off all large cloves for planting and few remaining small cloves into cooking. I got very good crop and still using them.

this year I am going to sow around 60 cloves in winter and 30 in spring to get continuity.
