  • Dwarf French Beans - Too Late?

Up until this morning, my dwarf french beans were doing really well. Then one of our chooks got into the raised bed and flattened them. Following Hattie's example the kittens decided to wreak havoc in amongst the beans too.

I've re-staked them, and cut of any damaged bits, but don't know if they will survive.

Is it too late to sow more beans?

Not too late at all, Jules - I still have a couple of trays to sow this weekend. They only take about 12 wks to harvest, so you'll get all of september out of them.

I have just done a second sowing of Sonesta as I did last year. Should get them planted out by mid July and have a reasonable crop by mid September. If you sow direct you will get an earlier crop if they survive the slugs.

Mine are 'Duel'. I've put some on moist kitchen roll in a tupperware tub to get them started, then I'll pop them straight into the raised bed. The soil is warmer in there, and we don't have much of a slug problem (just mad chooks and kittens)

I love them when they are tiny, like matchsticks!

Go ahead and plant them Julesapple. There's plenty of time. Keep the cats off them and they will be fine.

                Good to hear.

For one reason and another I've only just got some of my dwarf beans in and the missus loves em as they cook lovely. I planted up at least 60 plants this afternoon, so fingers crossed we may have a load at the tail end.

I grow them in containers and the last lot i sowed are just poking their heads up. I'll put another few in tub at the end of the month and that'll be the last but I daresay mid July should still produce a crop.

Last night the slugs have been at my beans not just the leaves but the growing tips on a couple so it looks like I'll be setting more this afternoon.
