Plants don't breathe the way we do in actively sucking air in and out (except lungwort), as for the soot, well the air has that in spades.

Barbeques spew out all sorts of noxious stuff including carbon monoxide (there was a recent case where someone died after taking a barbeque into a tent) and all plants transpire - they don't breath as they don't have lungs - information here The Open Door Web Site : Biology : How Plants Breathe : The Differences in the Exchange of Gases between Plant Respiration and Photosynthesis. Prolonged exposure to noxious gases will kill plants but I think it would take more than some smoke from a barbecue wafting over.

Providing it was just smoke I wouldn't worry to much, just be careful their BBQ isn't close enough to cause damage by localised heat. Says he who killed 3 runners some years ago with his own barbi.
