Calabrese is for autumn use and is NOT frost hardy. Broccoli can be grown to harvest at most times of the year and IS frost hardy!

to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Calabrese is the sort of stuff you buy in the supermarket and produces one fairly large head, broccoli produces smaller sideshoots.

        What they says ^

Also, calabrese produces green heads with thick stalks, while broccoli (PSB) tends to be purple or white on thin stalks.

Broccoli apparently means "little sprouts" in Italian (little spears, not little Brussels)

        Then you've got romanesco

In America the definitions for Broccoli and Calabrese are the other way around.

                  Trust them!

And in America they have something called Broccolini IIRC - seen on the Barefoot Contessa cooking programme!

SarzWix I will add adulation for your responses when the question is thoroughly answered.
SarzWix i do not find links to supermarket web site to be a good validating source.

I don't think I'll sleep properly tonight as we weren't able to find an adequate answer to katisue's questions.

I must say I was getting confused too with broccoli and calabrese-I can recognise and name only sprouting one-it's noticeably different.
Rustylady,if calabrese is the one being sold in the shops, why is it called broccoli?
My cogs are overheating sometimes when it comes to brassicas-the same with caulis-overwintering ones and autumn ones.A bit easier with cabbages.
Which ones do you usually go for?Calabrese or broccoli?Caulis-autumn or spring ones?I thought about having some next year so if you lot could point me in the right direction I'd be grateful. Thanks
