Enjoyed that - as he said if you take into account that the halved seed potatoes require 2 times the compost and space as the one undivided seed spud - it looks like a winner. I did have a decent crop once from spud peelings in the compost heap...sigpic

The whole process was invalidated when he rubbed out the other chits on the potatoes that were cut in half thus limiting the potential.
He didn't do this with the whole potato.
I'd think otherwise the yield would have doubled the single potato.Comment

Interesting. But like Jonny said, it would have been more interesting if he'd treated the half potatoes the same as the whole one. Did he rub chits off the whole potato? From the way it grew I suspect not. Was it the same size as the one that he cut in half? In my experience, size matters with potatoes.
I do sometimes cut potatoes in half, but only the biggest ones. So my half potatoes are similar size to the smaller whole ones. For earlies I rub off all but 2 or 3 chits, because I like reasonably big spuds. Doing it this way I can't tell the difference in harvest between half a big one or a whole small one. But it's not a scientific test because those are the results I expected to get: the observer was biased.
