  • Cucurbits in grow bags?

I am taking over some of the front garden this year, (the bits OH will let me have), so will be growing mainly cucurbits amongst the flowers / shrubs. Part of it is gravel and the soil parts have acid-loving plants in them and I think are unsuitable for me to plant straight in the ground. So I will get some grow bags I think; I know that cucumbers and I assume squash (yellow scallop) can go in grow bags, but what about courgettes and pumpkins? Do they need a deeper run for their roots?

Thanks for the link... so a growbag isn't deep enough then? I'll re-think.

Grow bags will work if you do the following :-)

Fold the grow bag in two width ways so that it is bent double on its self with each end sitting on the floor, try and get the same ish amount of compost in each end. Now cut the grow bag in two along the fold to give you two deep grow bag planters.

I did this last year with Cucumbers, worked a treat :-)

I've grown courgettes in a large growbag and had a fantastic crop. Far too much for us to eat. I had just two courgette plants against a south facing wall and fed them every two weeks with tomato fertiliser.

My garden centre sells two types of growbags. The standard size and a deeper one. The deeper one was great. I highly recommend it.

My first effort with courgettes was in a standard 33l growbag, two per bag, and got loads of Courgettes, in fact they did better than the ones grown in open ground the following year.
Last year I used a large (2' across) pot and did fairly well.
Go for it. Jus make sure it doesn't dry out and you feed regularly after about a month.

I thought about that Jilly and then decided to cut the bottom out of some old pots and make my own version of the fancy ones you see for tomatoes that sit in growbags.

I'm now spurred on by Maypril & Compost Corner and will have a look for some deeper growbags and just give it a go.

I've got a while before the seedlings will be ready to plant out so there's no rush.
