Kitty - have you grown them before/ using the propagator?

If they are sown a bit shallow you might be able to see them earlier than you should.

There shouldn't be any harm in quick germination, but just make sure the temperature isn't too high. You don't want very quick, soft growth - they have a long way to go.

Not necessarily - have you got a thermometer you can use to check the temp in the propagator?

The hotter it is, the more careful you will have to be when reducing the temperature and hardening off - depending on the ambient temperature, of course. At this time of year it's sensible to keep to the optimum temperature for germination and not go higher, for this reason.

I realise that it is probably milder in your parts of the world than mine, so hardening off is a bit easier.

I think I will have a cucumber through by tomorrow morning - planted a week ago today. They have not been in a propogator - just sat on the dining table.

Im trying out 5 or 6 varieties this year, and also 3 or 4 pickling types, not planted any yet as I still need to clean the other propagator.

Must you put them in propagator? The cucumber seeds aren't tough like aubergine, chillies or even tomatoes, more like courgettes and melon so I put them on window sill, given up on my boiler room as I can't keep a close watch on them as easily as from the window sill.

What do you mean by tough?

The reason that propagators are used is to created the warmer temperatures need for tender plants (including cucumbers) to germinate. It is quite reasonable to use a propagator for crops such as these if the ambient temps are too low.

Personally, I think it's a bit early anyway unless you have a nice warm greenhouse in which to grow them on. Their growth can be monstrous.
