  • Crops to sow now for a harvest this year

    Just that really.

I'm direct sowing runner beans this weekend. Packet says they're good to sow up to July, so I'm not unduly concerned. But I am aware that most folk will have put theirs in ages ago. I also have a cucumber plant, Burpless I think, which is only 4" high. Should that be further along given that it is almost July?

    Thanks.

Beetroot, carrots, fennel, swedes ( I think!) I sowed mine a few weeks ago. Salad leaves
I think you'd get a crop of dwarf French beans too...

In addition to the above I'd put in turnips, peas (a fast maturing variety), radishes, spring onions and you could also get away with Calabrese and some of the chinese cabbages.

I think I'd give kale a shot as well. I've not long sown another batch...

I've still not managed to get a single dwarf french bean to germinate this year!! I've got a few runners and climbing beans grumbling along, but my dwarfies are rotting faster than I can plant them. So I'm definitely going to be planting right up to the end of July, and even beyond if the weather improves. Last year I planted late crops both outside and in the polytunnel and they both did fine. And my 2 Burpless cucumbers haven't reached even 4" yet, but I just planted them outside the other day so I'm now expecting miracles. Ha. Ha.

I live in Central France and the temps have gone from (extremely wet) 5C - mid June - to (extremely dry) 33C - early July. Most of my veg has rotten in the ground thanks to the exceptional heavy rains that we've experienced recently. This morning I've found one single Pea plant and 3 onions - out of about 50 peas, 50 runners, 40 Broad Beads and 100 onions. One of my problems is that I work full time and have a small-holding with sheep, goats and hens so am limited for time. What would you recommend for me to grow for a chance to get something out of my veg plot?
            Thanks for any advice.

Personally I'm planning on sowing kale and oriental greens (random seeds I have left) this weekend.
If I can find space and compost I'll also do a bucket or two of carrots (Speedy variety from Suttons) and some kohl rabi. All four should get a decent crop before/when autumn kicks in and at the same time should be able to cope with the cold should it come early.
