  • Covering PSB and calabrese

    Hey,
I've got a 4m X 1m bed of calabrese and PSB, growing well. They've currently got a frame that's 70cm tall with debris netting over the top. My question is - is that going to be tall enough? Do I need a taller cover to allow them to grow taller, or can I keep them contained under the 70cm net, or once they get that tall can I just leave them uncovered?
    Thanks in advance!

The calabrese will probably be ok, but PSB will soon grow taller than 70cm. I've tried taking the net off when it gets too tall, but cabbage white butterflies soon found it. You would be better making a bigger net, if you can.

Thanks Penellype, that's what I thought but was hoping for another option! How tall do you think the cover would need to be?

There's not really any other option than to keep it covered with netting I'm afraid, if you want to protect it from pests.

I've grown purplesprouting a few times, and it's got to well over 1 meter tall in the spring when flowering.

My cage is about double that height and psb just about reaches the top.

Once the cabbage whites are gone and it gets colder if you don't have it covered the pigeons will strip it in 1/2 an hour

                  Taller cover built!

We've been away for a week and have come back to find the PSB trying to climb out of its cover, so now we've put together a taller frame for it.
                  Thanks for the advice everyone!

I use an old garden gazebo frame (tubular metal poles with plastic corner “brackets”) and a debris netting cover loosely stitched together to fit. Makes it tall enough to walk inside and you just push the legs into the soil. Surprisingly stable and loads of room inside!
