  • Courgettes going downhill.

For the life of me I cannot stop my courgettes getting mildew. I have tried the advice online of soapy, vinegar and seaweed water to no avail. And now one of my plants has died. Also, my cucumber plants are also getting mildew and also not a single flower has fruited.

The leaves on mine look like that too. I cut off the worst ones and ignore the rest.

So do I but I don't think the plant likes it.

The leaves on mine were OK until we had the heavy rain last weekend. The following day they looked awful .

What sized pots are they in? They're hungry plants and will quickly deplete the nutrients in the compost.
I notice that they're on trays which has water in it - they don't like their roots sitting in water.

If they're stressed they'll not thrive.

I agree with Jay-ell, the pots look too small.

Growing courgettes, at least in most parts of the UK, is always a race against mildew. If the plants are well watered and fed, they are usually able to produce despite the mildew but it slows them down.

The pots look far too small for the plants. When I’ve grown courgettes ive only ever grown patio /tub varieties and they are easily 3ft across and just as high. I didnt bother this year as ive dont really like courgettes. When they got mildew I just cut the worst of the leaves off and left the rest, but then I dont coddle anything. Its either going to grow or it isnt.

They were not intended to stay in the pots. Now planted out in raised beds. Time will tell but they don’t look good.

For the future, courgettes need planting out when they are much smaller - well before they flower. If they get too big for their pots they dry out quickly and get stressed and then they are very susceptible to mildew.
