    Could anyone identify this plant?

    Hi,

    So I was weeding yesterday and came across these little bulbs. I expect they were probably planted by the last people who lived here (we've only been here since May), but I didn't want whatever-they-are there, so pulled them up. Purely out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea what they might be?

    Look like self-seeded garlic to me. I've got lots of them on my plot, left by previous allotmentholders.

    Do they smell garlicky? It's the giveaway...

      Really? Oh! Not what I expected baby garlic to look like.

      Unfortunately I've already binned them so can't see how they smell, but if I find any more, I'll have a sniff. Thanks Martin!

        I don't think its garlic - the leaves look round, not flat.
        Could be almost anything. Replant it and show us the flower

        My guess is Muscari - Grape Hyacinth http://www.guide-to-houseplants.com/...hyacinths.html

            Ahhh, it could definitely be that! I've got some of that (or something that looks very similar, at the very least) elsewhere in the garden.

              They spread easily too. Rescue them from the bin and replant somewhere nice.

                Or not Another vote here for grape hyacinths. The long thin lanky look to them already makes me want to throw them...........unfortunately I have had a war at a previous house with them

                  Ehhh... as much as I do like the patch that I already have of it, I'm not sure I need a second!

                    I had a lot of them in my last house. Here, I have none and wish I did. My pet hate here is Montbretia, I'm always pulling that up.
                    Seems every house has something invasive that others might actually like to grow

                      Haha, I have a few different flowers/plants here that I'm half-tempted to pull up/cut back, but am worried they're "meant to be there" or something. I'm a newbie to veg growing but at least very interested in it. Flowers... I like that they look pretty, but my appreciation really ends there. XD God knows I couldn't identify any.

                        We're always happy to have a go at identifying a plant. One of us will recognise it
                        In a new garden, I would leave everything for a year, just to see what there is, and to learn about where the sunniest, windiest, frostiest places are, ready for replanning next year..

                          Thanks! I'll see if I can get some photos tomorrow.

                          I've been here for almost a year - since May - but I'm ashamed to say I've paid very little attention to the non- fruit/veg plants. XD Determined to be more attentive and take photos this year. My memory is terrible, so if I don't take pictures and notes, I forget the things I did notice anyway.

                            Take some photos of your garden, perhaps measure it and plot it on some graph paper (or an online planner). Mark up where North is, any trees or structures that you want to keep. As you identify plants add them to your plan to build up a record of what you have. Make special note of the plants you like (or dislike intensely)! Gradually, it will all come together and you'll be ready to change it as you want it to be.

                              Thanks for the advice, VC! I'll get on that tomorrow. So far I've only ever made plans for my veggie patches. It would make sense to draw up a plan for the whole thing!
