  • Compost worms

So having worms break down your compost is good.....but when you then use that compost do you have to sieve through it to get rid of these worms?

Why? Apart from to transfer them to the next bin/heap of compost. Red wigglers especially are not cheap.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

No. Not until the roots are dead (from natural causes in autumn).

Thats good then. I do try to rescue them and put them on my new heap. But I find at times I look down and they are wriggling around

Your compost isn't ready yet. When it is, the red worms go elsewhere

I am not sure that Haza is actually using Red Tigers TS. Standard earthworms tend to hang around for a while.

                Earthworms don't eat compost though

What about the ants, do they go elsewhere?

Seriously, I'd love to be able to make my own potting compost. Peat free is expensive and hard to come buy in anything other than teeny tiny bags round here, but I don't like the idea of bringing home the little bleeders.

You'll only have ants if your compost is too dry.

The best potting compost is leafmould anyways, garden compost is too rich for seeds

That makes sense as I emptied some weed bin tea on it a few weeks ago and it's a bit better. I rooted through it yesterday and I couldn't see any. As for the richness I was planning on mixing with sand (?)

The stuff is ready I think as it was left over from the last person and it was the bottom of the bin. looks well rotted. There are all sorts of works in it really. Mostly red.

Worms are no bother as they only eat stuff thats decaying anyaway. Some of my home made compost has no worms in it when I add it to the pots but has worms in when I empty pot out at the end of season.........no big deal.
You could sterilise the compost with heat..........but I never bother!
