  • Compost bags - warning to others

I am new (last year) to composting and bought some 'biodegradable' caddy liner bags to reduce work when washing out the caddy. We have steadily been filling two plastic daleks over the last year. I opened one last week to find that all the loose waste was lovely black crumbly stuff ready to use but everything that remained in the supposedly biodegradable bags was sealed in brown or white sludge that was a long long way from being ready.

I cut up all the bags with my spade and reloaded the bin but will have to start the wait again.

No more compost bags being used in our household

The bags may degrade under more intense heat than you can provide.

I'm studying a module called "Evaluating contemporary science" through the Open University and the chair for the module is a specialist in recycling of plastics. He did an example poster on bioplastics and in the conclusion it says "However biodegradation studies were at 32C which is rather warm for the UK."

They will be beautiful compost in 10,000 years.

Tried them myself the first year, never again!

I keep a bucket outside and empty it once a week, to my knowledge I have never had rodents in it (tempting fate), a few flys and their offspring in the summer, all goes in to one of the compost daleks.
Feed the soil, not the plants.

Not in a compost bin that is active.

So we should ask ourselves is the type of person who likes the convenience of tieing their mixed rubbish in a degradable bag likely to be the type of person who regularly turns their heap?
