    Climber ideas please

    I have been constructing a privacy area over the plots for OH, she is not a sun worshipper and likes a bit of privacy.....

    One of the sides has a 6' × 4' open slated panel which I want to grow something up, the challenge is that it needs to earn it's keep...between May and September.....any suggestion?

          Peas along with some sweetpeas or as VC suggested, and you avoided trombones

            How dense does the leaf growth need to be on that side? Which aspect is it?
            Maybe something semipermanent like a fan or espalier trained pear/plum/apple tree? or some of those blackberry hybrid berries (? Tayberry, loganberry etc)??
            For denser leaf growth, how about a row of raspberries? Or willow coppice for basket weaving supplies and firewood??

                Tayberry (yum). Buckingham which is thornless is good. Blackberry.
                Grape. You can use the leaves to for stuffing.
                Climbing rose for cut flowers.
                If you have a sheltered spot in full sun which you are willing to give a bit of shelter to in the winter edulis passion fruit. You might loose it though in a hard winter and probably won't get fruit but what a challenge. Mine grown from seed is currently 1ft high in a pot waiting to go out.

                  Haven't grown it for 40 years but seem to remember vegetable spaghetti vigorous and cropped well.

                  Maybe other squashes might do.

                      Still not decided what to plant....would a small fruit tree grow here or would it be too shady?

                        Partly depends on which direction its facing - plums are pretty adaptable and will generally give you a crop in less than ideal conditions - keeping it to size might be a problem.

                        Unless you are v short of space elsewhere, I'd probably go for a loganberry.

                          Perhaps not fruit/veg but ivy might fit the bill for a permanent evergreen solution.
                          You could then grow other things up in between like Nasturtiums or beans etc.
                          Or some hop plants !

                            You could try boysenberry GL quite vigorous supposed to be thornless though you will see some on the plants, it would need to be tied in to your screening, I bought one last year and have it growing up a trellis, hopefully will get fruit of it this year.
