  • Chillies Outdoors??

    Hi peeps

I now am the proud Mummy of around 30 odd Jalapenos, 6 Joe Longs, about 8 peach habaneros and a million or so Padrons. Now my conservatory ain't that big, has Red Spider Mite and His Lordship will be pretty upset if he cannot get to the cross-trainer et al. Sooooo, will these grow outside?

They should do just fine outside, that's where mine will be going but I wouldn't put them out just yet as chilli's don't like the cold, though they are quite strong and can live quite happily at around 7c. Put them in a sheltered position with plenty of light when outside. They might be ok as of now in an unheated greenhouse/coldframe depending where your from but your going to have to harden them off first. I would try and wait for a while just until the last frosts.

You could try and put them in a sheltered position with a fleece round it but I wouldn't risk it just yet!

Gawd no, they're only babies, I mean when they've grown up a bit and repotted. They are juggling for space with my tomatoes and peppers at the moment, in the conservatory - those red spids won't be around just yet so it's safe.

They will be going into pots and gradually hardened to go in the driveway but I was concerned that chillies should be indoors which would leave me trying to fit nigh on a hundred pots indoors

First bit of veg I grew last year was a chilli plant. It grew and produced fruit in the corner of a sunny flower bed.

What are you going to do with all the chillies from over 50 plants? I grow about a dozen and have more than enough fruits for us for the year.

I planted half my Cayennes on the allotment last year, and half in pots on the patio.

The lotty ones did much, much better.

I put 6 in my lotty last year and they did well. Depending on what type they may need a support. Still time for a frost now so be careful. Mine are doing well in a unheated greenhouse.

I did chilli's outside in pots last year up against a south facing wall - they did fine but had to sow seeds early to get a crop. Still using the dried ones now. My chilli's for this year just coming through now.

I germinated mine indoors, but they have now been moved into the plastic greenhouse and they seem to be doing well. If you haven't got a greenhouse, can your OH make you a cloche or cold frame.....its in his interest so he can get to his crosstrainer!
