  • Chard

I am growing 3 plants of chard this year, never grown or eat it before.

So I am looking on ideas on what I can do with my chard once harvested.

What do you guy do with it?

I generally use it as a substitute for spinach - so any recipe that calls for spinach, you can use chard instead (with the rib taken out).
I also eat it as a side veg - take out the stem, chop that up roughly and fry it in a little oil for a 5 minutes and then add the chopped leaf, and fry for a few more minutes until it's cooked. It's nice with fish.

I agree with Bario the leaves are like spinach and need squeezing well once cooked. The stems are edible too. Chop up the whole lot and cook it in the water that is on the leaves and a bit of butter then swurrze it out well and eat it as it is or make a gratin, cheese sauce and topped with more cheese the browned under the grill. Yummie!

Cariann, I've merged several threads about using Chard at https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...ook_72602.html

I'm sure you'll find something there!!

steam it, fry it (as above).

It's also nice if you fry it up with a bit cumin, chilli, garlic, etc and have it with curries.

I would have thought you'd need more than three plants as it does shrink a lot on cooking, but you can save it up by blitzing it the microwave till tender and then freezing it.

Just look for spinach (sag in Indian ones) recipes and substitute chard. I like creamed chard but am a bit naughty as I use double instead of single cream!

Must try some of those recipes off thread.

The coloured one are pretty and at a pinch could go in border. Got a load of yellow ones to prick out when things dry out. I'm a bit miserly and try doing all the plants that come up as you can get three or four off one seed. Don't worry about leaf miner, there's usually good periods with none. At a pinch trim it out unless you fancy extra protein
