  • Carrot query

I've been sowing so far in propagators/seed trays etc, as my beds aren't yet ready (read: flooded)
It's not really a problem, as most of the stuff I've planted is for the greenhouse, or can't be planted on until they're bigger

But... all my carrots say to plant straight into beds.

Can carrots be planted into seed trays/troughs/toilet roll insides and then moved out when it's less of a quagmire?

What would be best to sow them into?

    Thanks!

I planted mine into individual seed tray things (sorry can't think of the proper name!) then moved them into buckets. You just need to be careful to make a big enough hole for them to go into and handle very carefully as they don't like being moved much as it affects the roots on the big root!

However I ended up with some very nice carrots

Carrots do not like to be moved. You would be far better to sow them out in the open ground in drills. Dig and rake and make sure the soil is free of stones. If your soil is bad sow a short type of carrot. Paris Market is a really small one and can be sown in containers or i have found Royal Chantenay are also good for poor soil as the carrot is short and stump rooted.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Carrots don't like being transplanted as they are tap rooted. You may get away with sowing into cells and transplanting, but if you break the root they will end up all sorts of strange shapes. You can sow direct into large pots and leave them there for the duration.
