  • Can I Move Swiss Chard Plants?

    Hello Folks,

Just clearing a couple of beds for some asparagus due in a few weeks.

I have harvested the swiss chard leaves but wondered if there is a chance they would regrow if I potted them up, nothing ventured?

    As always thanks
    Cheers

    No! not worth even trying.

Chard is related to Perpetual Spinach and Beetroot. You might get an early crop if you sow a row of seed now as you are well south. Otherwise sow in April and in August next season.

You might get away with it but it's most likely that it will just go to seed shortly even if you don't move it. Sow again. I would.

We moved swiss chard and it went on to produce for us the following year as well.
It's worth a try if you're taking them out anyway. If it doesn't work you haven't lost anything.
The problem with rounded personalities is they don't tesselate.

Swiss Chard doesn't go bitter like lettuce does if it flowers; so yes - just cut off any flower stems and keep harvesting. It will go a bit limp for a week or two but it will keep producing leaves for yonks.

I've left swiss chard for seed, harvesting the seed, cut the seed heads back and the roots still produced more leaves, all through winter through to it's 3rd year. Amazing stuff.

Well, I seem to be out-voted, although Flummery agrees with me. So, taking the general concensus, I too will have a go at moving some chard plants and see what happens - will of course keep you posted.

Thanks for all your replies folks,

I ended up digging them up but will leave them next a move one or two to see what happens.
                Cheers

fantastic! I have some rogue ones in the wrong place. will move them where they would have been planted had I bothered. Im currently trying to dig and manure round them! They arrived after my neighbour dropped a pack of seeds in the rain.

hadnt even considered chard. Now bought 2 pack for next year, coloured and green. from what i can see the slugs and pigeons are not keen and its the wrong family for club root......AND you can eat the stalks!

As I said I cleared them in the end to get the beds ready for the asparagus.

The next chard I grow will be in containers so I will keep harvesting until it tells me enough!
                        Cheers
