  • Can I dual plant pea with corn or tomato?

I've got some sugar snap peas that I've grown the last couple of years but they grow up to 6-7' high and take up a bit too much room for what I get off them. I usually use 6' canes for support.

This year I wondered if I could dual plant with my sweetcorn plants or my tomatoes that are in pots. Using the same canes with the tomatoes that I use with these peas.

Would there be enough room for both plants in a pot or would that be pushing it a bit? They're the Morrisons black flower bucket type.

Also don't know if the peas will like the tomato feed as they prefer very little nitrogen, I think.

Alternatively I've got some courgette plants in old 60litre compost bags up against a fence so they could go in there and climb the fence.

I'm a bit short on space this year so trying to fit things in where I can.

You can only try it? lol

Luckily, tomato feed isn't high in Nitrogen. Its high in Potash (for fruit) and shouldnt have an adverse affect on peas I don't think. Peas create nitrogen I think? Not sure if that would affect the tomato, but its only 1 plant right? so cant imagine it. The problem will just be keeping the pot well watered (a mulch might help).

Peas with sweetcorn is the same idea as beans with sweetcorn. My only concern is that as these things climb up the cornstalk I imagine they must 'suffocate' the corn a little bit.

They are more likely to suffocate the toms than the corn.

Thanks for that. I think Zazen is right. The corn is more sturdy so maybe it'll stand up to the climbing vine tendrils. As you all say, can only but try.

Fortunately I work from home so watering isn't a problem.

I had assumed your tomatoes have a cane and the pea would climb the cane rather than the tomato
