  • Calabrese catastrophe

I'd really appreciate some advice as for the second year ( I've only had two goes) my calabrese has produced shoots with yellow flowers instead of nice green heads. Where am I going wrong, and is there anything I can do to rescue them or should I be ditching the plants to make room for something else? Help!!

Where are you trying to grow them (e.g. pots, open ground)

All brassicas like fairly firm soil, adequate spacing, and adequate water. How big do the heads get before they turn into flowers?

That's the odd thing they never formed heads. I've been checking the regularly, (every couple of days or so), because of the problem last year, so they would have had to be quick. I was careful to make sure the soil was firm and I don't think water would have been the problem, again I was attentive with this. I will say having a small garden space might be a problem.
I can't do a pic although I have one I'm not techy enough to work out how to add it on here

They have to form a head of some size, cos that is what turns into the yellow flowers. Is the picture on your computer?

To add a picture from your computer: When you do a post or reply click on "Go Advanced". Click on the paperclip on the top row above the text box and follow the instructions.

Thanks for the instructions, unfortunately after several attempts I keep getting a message saying it's failed.

Roseanna try another way, to reply with thumbnail click on go advanced, click on manage attachments, then click select file, click browse and go to the file where you have your pic stored, double click on pic and then click upload file, click done and you should be there.

Like RL I can't see how the plant is running to seed unless some type of head as formed so a pic would really help.

Thanks for all the help but the it's just not responding at all to the instruction to upload at all now. I supposed it must be my PC or I'm missing something really obvious.

Hi Roseanna I had this problem with my calabrese last year. Never did work out why it did it - the plants were a pathetic size and trying to flower. Anyway, I eventually managed to get some edible calabrese by just cutting off the stalks that had produced flowers and then feeding the plants with a bit of chicken manure and watering them (heavily, not a sprinkle) a few times. They didn't produce a big head, but they did make enough side-shoots to make it worthwhile keeping them going

All my bras are carp this year. Cabbages - carp - cauli - embarrasing, calabrese - shameful. Really really pitiful. Blame it on the weather and tell yourself next year will be better. Oh and btw your piccie may be too big. There's a size limit I believe. Can you shrink it?
