  • Cabbages - help!

Can anyone offer me any advice (step - by - step guide!) on starting off and planting out cabbages. I have got the 'first early market 218' variety.

do they have a long growing season?

    Hi Clarea,

'First early' is a spring cabbage that you sow in the late summer and cut in the spring (suprise suprise:-))

You can sow them is a seed bed or start them off in the 24 paks that you can get from Wilko's or your local garden centre. They won't need heat to germinate at that time of year and then just plant them out late summer early autumn, The spacing depends how big you want them. You can keep sowing some spring greens through the year, but I dont know if these will. Just make sure they don't dry out as this eill check them.

They do, but not freshly dug. They like the soil firm and you usually use them as a follow on crop so they have the manure frm the previous crop.
