  • Cabbage seeds

I have finally found Christmas Drumhead Cabbage after years of searching for it. Some guy down Kent has a nursery and he grows them so I have ordered some from him. 10 plug plants for £1.99.

My question is...has anyone ever grown seeds from there cabbages?

I've left some to self seed - and they have. If there are other brassicas in flower at the same time they would probably cross-pollinate and the seeds would not be "pure".

I only want seeds from this plant so I would harvest the others before then and keep these just in the ground. Thanks VC.

Good advice on seed saving at Saving Brassica Vegetable Seed
                  but you need 20 plants.

I am growing cabbage from seed this year.
Red cabbage, they germinated about two weeks ago.
They are in small pots in the conservatory until they are a bit bigger.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I was really looking forward to these plants as I cannot find the seeds anywhere and I wanted to collect seeds of my own.

I have emailed asking where they are and If he says he is going to send them I am going to ask for a refund. Why run a business online if your not going to send peoples orders out.

Still no plants. Got a email the other day saying they have been posted, got a parcel yesterday but was not in. So going post office to collect today, hope its my plants off this guy.

Will never be ordering from him again.

Living in Kent I know swanley village, don’t live there but we cycled through it a lot (every weekend doing various routes on the country roads through villages for months) on our long training rides when we were doing London to Brighton etc type bike rides.

I’ve never heard of the nursery, seen it locally advertised or seen it/any signs for it on my travels - even those that don’t ‘open’ officially normally have a sign outside and/or a plant stall that is visible from the lane they are on. Unfortunately sounds like it may be an man with a greenhouse rather than a proper nursery business. I’d also be wondering if you can be sure they will be the right cabbage if they do turn up.
