  • Butter Beans

What type of beans do you need to grow to make butterbeans?
I already grow Haricot beans but want to try butterbeans next season.

There is a butter bean called Spagna Bianca - it's technically a runner bean - and will cross with others - so if you are going to save seed from it, you need to isolate it. I was given some by our PigletWillie and they are growing fantastically well just now. I'm growing them in my garden plot because everyone (except me!) grows runners at the allotments. You could use some butter beans from the shops, I suppose, but those I was sent were about twice the size of T*sco's Finest! You might get it by googling the name but you can always remind me in a couple of months and I can let you have some.

I'm growing Runner White Emergo - the dried beans look very much like butterbeans.
