Burpless cucumbers support

    Burpless cucumbers support

    I've searched the archives and can't find exactly what I'm after.

    Do I have to support my burpless cucumbers? Or will they do OK on the ground.
    I know some wit is going to say try both, which I might, but I'd like your experiences first.

    I used a piece of that rigid green plastic mesh - put it upright to about 3' and secure with three or four 4' canes, and the cucumbers will climb up it. Keeps the cucumbers clean & straight.

      Last year I grew them in grow bags stood on there end and cut in two (to make deep pots) and then trained them up my garden trellis, worked well.

        OK thanks, so it looks like I should support them.

        The problem I have, is that the most successful cucumber year I ever had, I just let them go where they wanted on the ground.
        They weren't burpless, just some cheapy off Netto or something.

        I am going to try both, but thankyou for your advice.

          How high and wide do they get? I'm just trying to get an idea of the size of support I need to provide

            I grew burpless last year (in the allotment) and let them trail on the ground and got loads of cucumbers from them! That said, all the pictures I see seem to have them supported so I might have been lucky.

              My support was 4' wide and 3' tall & I had two plants, which worked quite well, but the support should really have been a foot or so higher.

                I grow BTG in the greenhouse every year. They are supported on a 6' high plastic mesh. They would go higher if not stopped off. I have tried growing them outdoors both supported and unsupported but without success. Be sure to pick them while quite small, no more than a hand span in length. I alway manage to overlook one or two, which go on to produce tasteless giants, of no possible use other than for seed, and the plant stops producing thereafter. They are worth the effort, I have never tasted such flavoursome cukes.

                  I couldn't agree more - it was my first go at growing cucumbers last year and I cannot believe how delicious they were and so unlike supermarket ones.
