  • Brassicas sowing question ....

    Hi all

Had started my sowing this year well in April and then was laid up with a really bad back for nearly 3 weeks.... onto May and was VERY busy with work... anyway enough of the background story. I did sow brussels and PSB but unfortunately the majority of which was munched on by resident families of snails, kept meaning to re sow but time just passed by, so my question is are there any brassicas that can still be sown now - broccoli, kale, cabbages, PSB ? If sow should they be started in the greenhouse in modules now ? If necessary I will buy plants but if theres any that stand a chance from seed now I would like to try.
Thanks in advance for your help.

You can sow kale now and you might be lucky with other winter veg. They don't need a greenhouse in this weather though

Try Brussel sprouts. You may get a late crop. You can only lose a few seeds and you will learn from the experience as to how late you can sow in your area.
      Good luck.

savoy cabbages can still be sown now.
There's nothing wrong with buying a few plants from the garden centre if you are pushed!

I only sowed my kale and PSB about a week ago. Germinated on the windowsill in celltrays and now outside on the staging (shielded from the ****** sparrows).

I sowed my PSB at the end of May last year and got a great crop. You're definitely still OK for kale and winter cabbage should be fine too. I only eat autumn calabrese and I'm not starting to sow that until this weekend so it will depend on the variety. Far too late for sprouts though, tried them late in the past and they just don't work well so you're best buying some and getting them in pretty sharpish.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

A late PSB like Red Arrow is fine for sowing now, doesn't harvest until next Spring - mine have only just finished.

Really recommend a Calabrese called Belstar F1 Hybrid - fine to sow now for harvesting in the early autumn - grew it last year and I was very impressed (so were the family!)

Comfreyfan - I have Red Arrow seeds so will get them going today and will also get some of those Belstar seeds, that photo is sooooooo impressive!

                Thanks again everyone.
