They need plenty of water and don't sow too early, or in the warm.

Don't sow in the warm? It's quite warm outside so how do I avoid it lol?

I did sow them in April/May which was possibly too early. Hopefully the ones I have just planted do better. I'll make sure they get plenty of water this time (even though I thought they did last time).

You can't help the outside temperature, but some people start them in modules in the greenhouse......

I reckon you're better off with direct sowing at this time of year.

I have only just sown mine outside (Sunday), so still ample time.

Does it make a difference? The pot is outside anyway.

Sowing in the ground means less root disturbance and more even watering. I sow my first root crops like beetroot in trays just to get a head start on the weather. Once it's warm enough though, direct sowing is always better.
