My vote is for Crown Prince all the way. I grow a lot of different varieties, and its flavour is unsurpassed in my opinion. My largest grew to about 12" diameter, and probably approx 6-8" high, which isn't enormous by any means.

Don't forget that if you let several fruits develop on one vine, they will be much smaller than if you only let one grow.

Give it a go, you won't regret it.

It's that living on my own they'd be too much to eat, even the smaller ones look huge (another plot holder was growing them this year!)
I know you can cook and freeze, but I prefer the texture when squash are roasted fresh. YUM

I regularly freeze any surplus, and it can be used for all sorts of things. Pumpkin pie, added to bread, scones etc.

I fancied blue ballet to grow but have not done so this year...(grumble grumble) so would be interested to hear what others think too.

If you chop it into chunks and freeze then when you come to cook it , get your fat nice and hot in the roasty tin and chuck in the chunks straight from frozen. Better than wasting any ..... I also steam and puree some for the freezer so it is ready to be used in various recipes.

The only comment I'd have on Blue Ballet is that I've found it doesn't produce very much. Not grown Crown Prince as they're bigger than I'd want so can't comment on those.

Crown Prince F1. Cucurbita Maxima. This is very sweet and tasty, having large blue/grey fruits each up to 4 kg, with a good quantity of orange flesh and should store well into spring or early Summer. Trailing vine up to 3 or 4 m.
Blue Ballet Cucurbita Maxima. Produces Blue/Grey skinned, pear shaped fruits with orange flesh up to 1 Kg. Large seed cavity with dry, medium sweet, full flavoured, orange flesh. Stores well into the Spring. Semi-bush up to 2m.

I would also comment that Blue Ballet takes longer to mature than Crown Prince. Take a look at the photos on the web site and see the difference in the amount of usable flesh. Crown Prince every time.

Yes but the whole point of growing a smaller variety is that you want less flesh at a time
