  • Bitter swedes

Just harvested my first swede and cooked it last night before mashing it with some butter and pepper.

For some reason it had a bitter after taste. Anyone know why ?

It was a decent size and a modern variety grown from seed so not sure what has gone wrong.

Is there anything i can do as i have two rows of them

I find they taste bitter if I haven't watered them enough during any dry spells.
They do tend to sweeten up after a frost, so don't give up on them yet.

Try using them in stews see if they taste better cooked that way or maybe cook them with a sweeter tasting veg.
      Location....East Midlands.
