  • Best pea & bean varieties?

    Hello,

Planning for next year and looking for some advice on which peas & beans to grow.

Broad beans and peas are probably my favourite veg to grow and eat fresh, so I want to grow as many as I can. Am I right in thinking that there are some broad beans (aquadulce?) and peas that I can sow in autumn and leave over-winter for an early crop next year? Can anyone advise on that?

I'd like to have as long a broad bean & pea season as possible so would like advice on the varieties to try. I'd also like some sugar snap peas, but not mange tout as I don't really like them!

French beans and runner beans - I've never grown these before so have no idea, and don't like them as much as broad beans, but I'd like to give a few varieties a try if anyone can recommend any. Ideally I'd like to try some of the yellow and purple podded ones as well as a green variety, simply because they look nice together (I know the purple ones go green once cooked though!).

My legumes bed is going to be about 1.2 x 5m, so not even sure how much I can fit in there!

I'd really appreciate some words of wisdom!

    TIA

    Best pea & bean varieties.

Best BB for me was Aquadulce Claudia. I shall be using what I have left from this summer as soon as I can clear a little space. I also did Bunyard Exhibition and they were fantastic. As I dont have and seeds left, I probably got rid of the packet so cant remember if they are OK for Oct/Nov planting.
Peas:- I'm sure the ones I have are Meteor and they are suppose to be OK for late planting.
    Runner Beans:- Princess Di.
    Carrots, Nantes.
French Beans:- Purple queen, Kingshorn Wax, and green beans were "thin Beans' - I really must scrabble round the garage to find the packets to look up the names. Also, try Yin Yang beans - fun and delicious.

    Hope this helps.

If you want, I can send you some of my own runner bean seeds for next year, I generally save my own seeds. much cheaper than bought, I'll have Enorma, Painted Lady And White lady, all very good flavored and heavy cropping. PM me if you'd like some saving.
