    Best Gardening Gadget

    When looking through the catalogues or wandering through the garden centre I often find myself rolling my eyes and wondering why anyone would spend money on this or that.

    I had thought this about pot tampers but after having something akin to frostbiten fingers having filled about 200 loo rolls with moist compost in the cold greenhouse a couple of days after Christmas I decided maybe a tamper would have been a good idea

    The next time I was in a hardware store I noticed a broken spindle (staircase stick!) that had got snapped in two and was reduced to £1... Having sawn off the squarish end and painted it I am now the proud owner of a tamper the perfect size for loo rolls!

    Just wondering if everyone else has a favourite gardening gadget?

    Maybe I'll be won over and be increasing my gardening gear wishlist!

    My favourite gadget is my OH!


    ...second is my home-made kneeling pad- made from a big double sheet of bubble wrap.
    I have problems bending over for too long- and kneeling so it's perfect for me as I can side sit for a while- then kneel, then side sit the other way. Perfect!

    ...third is my large orange bucket!

      Mines a paper pot maker made out of two different sizes of plastic waste pipe offcuts and a piece of wood instead of using the 'dome cap' my other item is a desert spoon thats handy for filling the pots.

          I love my spin tiller. It's like a mini hand push rotovator. It lifts weeds, turns over soil and breaks up lumps with hardly any effort. My late father bequeathed it to me and I never take a walk around the plot from spring without it at hand.

              Not gadgets of course, but I always have my knife, secateurs, some string and a trowel to hand.

                            I am a bit OCD about labelling seeds sown, so I use my Brother Labeller all the time. The best gadget I don't have which I wish I did was a device made by my Grandad. It was a flat piece of wood that just fitted inside a seed tray. Like a pot tamper but much cleverer. On one side he had a handle but on the other side were a series of dowel pegs so when it was pressed into the tray of compost it made all the holes needs for pricking out seedlings. He had two different sizes depending on how far the spacing needed to be. I've no idea what happened to it when he died but it would be really handy now. Anyone want to make me one? Beyond my very basic woodworking skills!

                              It's a shame you could not find your Dads' Wendy but you can still pick them up.....I know it doesn't have the same sentimental value.
