  • Basil and tomato fertilizer?

Was just about to take the plunge and sprinkle on some basil seeds randomly in the pots that I put the tomato plants in. After all, tomato, basil, what's not to like!?

Then I wondered - would all the tomato fertilizer to come have a toxic/detrimental/weird effect on the basil itself rendering it inedible?

Anyone done this by chance and could advise?

Methinks you doth worry too much

Basil just grows, doesn't matter what you stick on it, as long as it gets enough water.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I don't really understand your question, if you're worried about using tomato food then why are you happy eating tomatoes which have been fed with it? Personally I use a bit of tomato food and quite a lot of comfrey dilute and I'd not worry about basil with either of those.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hehe, I could be said to worry too much, aye. Thanks both!

My thoughts (not sure if I could actually describe it as reasoning) were basically that if basil plants were so much smaller than tomato plants the fertilizer amounts that were designed for tomato plants would perhaps build up in some way in the basil... Suppose I could also worry about whether the fruits suck it up too if I put my mind to it, given that they are so much smaller than both.

I swear my brain wilts in the heat!

I think it's a pertinent question. Tomato feed is designed to encourage the growth of fruit(tomatoes). Basil doesn't produce fruit as such , but will go to seed at the slightest provocation. Will the tomato feed cause the basil to "bolt" ?

I grew basil in my tomato containers last year and it was fine.
