  • Aubergines? How many can I expect?

Hi I bought an aubergine plant when it was tiny, and it is doing really well. Loads of flowers coming still. I have just cut 2 supermarket sized fruits off it and we had them for tea in a potato gratin (yum).
Question is how many can I expect from the plant as I have already had 2 whoppers? It's in the GH in a very large pot.

    Cheers, janeyo

I have three good sized fruits at the moment but I read you are probably looking at supporting 5 fruits per plant at the most.

I pick mine fairly small (smaller than tennis ball) and the fruit seems to just keep on coming.

None if my plants are anything to go by, have tried growing them loads but only ever had one fruiting year! Lots of flowers though which at least are pretty!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've got one baby aubergine on mine at the moment & about 4 other flowers & like Shushkin I've read that about 5 is the most you will normally get off a plant. You can get more especially if you're growing them undercover but I think they advise you to stop the plant & remove any extra flowers so the plant puts it's energy into developing the fruits before frosts arrive.

In 3 years of trying I never had a single fruit So I don't/won't grow them any more. Or melons, never got a fruit off a melon plant either!

Same here! Although this is my first year attempting them. I have 2 Aubergine plants, that have so far been an epic failiure: One baby fruit between the two, which got completely hollowed out by slugs before it could mature!

So maybe I should be grateful for the 2 whoppers I have had!
I can see at least 2 more little ones coming so maybe that will be the lot.

                  We've got 4 in the greenhouse & 4 outside~None have even flowered!
Last year we had the same problem that the very few fruits we had got hollowed out by the slugs!

The last two years I have only managed to get one fruit from each plant, but we have not had great summers.

It is advisable to limit the fruits even in a good year, however. About four or five per plant should be possible.

Aubergines need constant warmth, regular feeding, and enough growing media to support their long development. Don't skimp on the pot size.

Seems that I am with the majority on this one. About 20 plants some indoors some out and not a single fruit. Plenty of flowers and plenty of bees visiting them but no aubergines.

Till I got to gojiberry it seemed that the faliures were mainly from grapes in the north. We have done quite well with our one plant in the greenhouse and have around 6 small developing fruits which I intend to pick small.

My first try and no sign of an aubergine, even a flower would be nice!
