  • aspargus with raspberry

nosing ( yes im nosing other plots looking for tips ) i spotted raspberrys with very healthy looking asparagus spears already quite tall

Its looks higgle de piggledy lots of established raspberry canes trimmed with new shoots, load of small weeds, and asparagus tips shooting up inbetween,

    does anyone else do this,

I assumed asparagus were fussy blighters own bed of well drain soil etc,

Im thinking of doing this myself as a space saver

I grow things over my asparagus - salads, spring onions, some light herbs etc. They poke through when they are ready and then I get the space back afterwards. Usually, what is covering them are small seedlings at the time so they get cropped and the space gets used.

I like the idea of putting them in amongst rasps so might well do that myself!

I've got strawberries in my asparagus bed, but hadn't thought about raspberries... I imagine it could make weeding a bit prickly! And wouldn't the raspberry runner thingies tend to take over a bit?

Oh - I never buy prickly rasps. Ever.

Three years ago I thought a row of raspberries across the middle of the plot was a good idea, and very close to it a row of asparagus. It's worked pretty well, will be eating the asparagus for the first time this spring just as the rasps are shooting up. The only problems have been the rasp suckers which invade the asparagus clumps, but I found they will pull up quite easily in winter and I now have transplanted quite a few to a shady spot at the end. Haven't found the asparagus minds, it looks pretty good really.

I've put my raspberries alongside the asparagus and thought this was probably a mistake due to the runners, but maybe it will work after all.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
