  • Asparagus is through

Asparagus is through. Usually through earlier than this - mid March. Still, better late than never. A few days until there is a meal. Summer is coming!
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

Some of mine has been up for about a fortnight. The rest won't be long. I have to just enjoy watching it grow for this year and look forward to crops in 2021. Not easy to resist the temptation!

I’ve eaten my very first spear, last week. There’s 2 more nearly ready. Two years is a long time to wait from planting a crown to your first harvest. So so worth it!

My first asparagus seed germinated yesterday.
Is it a 3 year wait from seed to harvest ?

          It's ten years isn't it?

Over the weekend, we've planted our new asparagus bed at the plot. Three different types, 10 of each. And now we wait...

Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing-'Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel paths with broken dinner-knives. ~ Rudyard Kipling

First 4 spears showing through last week over here in tropical Suffolk. I've got five 15 foot rows and must have more than 30 plants, but it's always the same old faithful crown that pokes through first. Wonder why that is. It's in the corner of the bed with paths on two sides, maybe it's getting warmth from the paths, but why not the other 3 corners. Weird!
                    Are y'oroight booy?

Maybe it's planted a bit higher than the others.

Seems it doesn't like growing upon the moor. Although my landlady gets loads...

I was given a small piece of root at the back end of last year, which I planted and marked out in a corner of our allotment.
I had no signs of it last weekend.
Not sure if it would survive the upheaval though anyway.

Woohoo, after my rant on here the asparagus must have felt ashamed. Up to the plot earlier today and there were 2 nice spears. Picked them both and then spotted a few more just breaking the surface. Brought them home and number 1 daughter and I ate them raw

Thanks QW for shaming the asparagus!
