  • asparagus mulching query

Today I cut down the ferns from my asparagus crowns planted in the spring. I left short stumps a few cm high before mulching the whole bed in composted manure. This is what I thought I had read was the correct thing to do.

I'm sure checking what I thought I knew BEFORE would have been a thoroughly sensible thing to do. What I actually did was have a read up after finishing and noticed it mentioned mulching around the crowns, but not necessarily over the stumps. Just wondering how important this is and if covering everything is likely to cause a problem?

It should be fine the way you've done it.

I truly hope you've done it right as I did much the same a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks both for the reassurance. Just got to wait for them to pop back up next year then so I can cut my first few spears!
