  • asparagus crowns

    Hi
My asparagus crowns arrived today, their bed is all ready to put them in but all my veg books say to wait until mid april, is this right. What do I do with them until then? They already seem to be sprouting. Im so excited but a bit confused.
    It doesn't take much though!!!

Get them in asap- you don't want the roots to dry out.
I'd cover them with fleece at the moment as it's so cold at night at the moment!

Soak the roots first for a couple of hours to help them recover from transporting ( I'm presuming they are bare rooted??) before putting them in the ground.

As Nicos says get them in asap if the roots dry out they may not recover, are they off that guy on ebay? I got some off him but because my bed isnt ready yet the are in a barrel that has holes in the bottom covered with damp compost.

      Cheers Chris

Get them in the ground and cover with fleece or cloches till it warms up.

How do I make a raised bed to plant asparagus in. For years have 'not bothered' because hubby and I couldn't be bothered to wait for the harvest. Of course, we've now missed 2 seasons in this house when the asparagus plants could've been establishing. I'm now keen to grow asparagus but unsure as to how to go about it. Help!
