  • Anyone grown/growing cowpeas?

I've just recieved some of these from Baker Creek:

Cowpeas Heirloom Seeds - Rareseeds.com Catalog

I hope it'll be warm enough for them here! Anyone tried growing them, or plan to this year? Hints or tips?

Ah, that's black eyed pea isn't it? Very popular in the Southern U.S., Africa and Asia. Sounds like they need it hot? here's a quick Google result: Requires a very warm sunny position in a moist but well drained soil; they can tolerate drought. Grown in warm temperate and tropical zones, it is best started off in a greenhouse in Britain and planted out after the last expected frosts. Usually used as a green manure in UK.

    Good luck!

Yeah, that's the family. Lots more varieties than just the black eyed peas though. I've seen them mentioned as a 'crop for a sustainable future', so thought it would be interesting to give them a go.

A US heirloom company that posts to the UK? Now that throws up some interesting options. Sorry I can't help you with cowpeas, (I was doing my own research that brought me here), but thanks for the unintentional nugget of information.

Welcome to the Vine. You do realise this thread is over eight years old. I wonder how Seahorse got on with them.
