  • ants gone

Just come in from a day in the garden and realized I haven't been bitten by ants. In fact I've not seen many at all. Two weeks ago I counted about 40 ants nests and took the advice posted here that semolina or polenta would help to deal with them. It certainly seems to have worked.

Fantastic! We still have ants, but I think not so many. not really sure, as my only yardstick really is how many I see when squishing aphids! I am still seeing a fair few, but they are not all over the plants the way they were before.

I've been mixing the semolina with sugar to make it more attractive - I've seen ants crawling around in the stuff so the only question is whether or not they are taking it back to give the queen!

Can I ask, why semolina? I've got lots of big ants in our garden to be and was going to try boiling water. Does semolina poison them or something?

It was a tip from an earlier thread on here - apparently they eat it but because they can't digest it they explode. The hope is that they forager ants will take some of it back to the queen and that she will eat some - dead queen = no more eggs and no more ants... Can't speak from personal experience as we're still trying it out, really, but any completely earth-friendly way to stop ants from using by beans as aphid pasture has to be worth a try!
