  • Am I too late...

I've been quite busy (read as lazy) up to now and what with the weather taking so long to warm up I've not bothered to plant pretty much anything this year. I've already bought a few tomato and chilli plugs etc but now I'm starting to miss homegrown cuc's and courgettes. Am I too late to sow them and have any kind of crop? I don't have a greenhouse but I do have a few blowaways that normally house the cuc's and stuff like that. Or worst case scenario is it worth buying any plugs/plants? I wish I'd got my finger out earlier...

I'd never say never so give it a go under the blowaways.

I sowed some courgette seeds at the end of July last year and managed to get a couple of fruits from them. You might do better if you can find a few plants to buy though!

Or if you've got the seeds already, do both! Sow some seeds, and buy a couple of plants as backup. We may yet have an indian summer, fingers crossed!

I think the first time we grew cucumbers it was July. We didn't know what we were doing back then, think we got two or three. If you can get hold of plants though I'd do that - or both.

We have a local Wyevale garden centre - I was down there yesterday and they had all sorts of plants reduced, including courgettes, cucumbers and tomatoes, but also loads of veg and herbs. Well worth a visit to the garden centre just in case.

Thanks all. That is probably the best way to go and try to do both. Let that be a lesson for next year, don't be lazy when the weather is cack cos you'll only regret it when the sun comes out.
