  • Am I too late to plant out first and second early potatoes?

    Afternoon all.
Due to one thing and another getting in the way of me doing what I intended in the garden this early summer I’ve still not planted out my first and second early potatoes (Charlotte and Pentland Javelin). Will I be ok to still plant them out this weekend? Just expect a later crop? Thanks x

You might as well put them in if you have the space. I've only recently put mine in. It'll be very cold here by the end of September at night and first frost will be mid-October. I reckon I should just be OK.

JBA seed potatoes say your Pentland Javelin will be ready in 13 to 15 weeks from planting. They also suggest Charlottes for planting in August for harvesting at Christmas. I think that might be a bit optimistic in Stoke (I used to live in Macclesfield), but I can't see any reason why you shouldn't plant them now.

I'd give them a go. You'll probably get a half decent crop and if we get an Indian Summer it might be a brilliant crop.

They'll be fine time and weather-wise, but blight may end up being a problem. Usually earlies are out before blight hits, but yours won't be, of course.

Yea stick them in..who knows what the weather will do..will be late harvest but if weather cooperates then worth it..
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

My thinking is... you'll get more of a crop from them this year if you put them in the ground, than if you don't
