  • Allotments in Birmingham at risk of being shut

Our allotments are at risk of being shut. Can you please help us and sign the petition and share it?

Please see below message from our committee:

As many of you already know, the 2022 Commonwealth Games will be taking place in Birmingham.

Our allotments are in the same park as the Alexander Stadium, where the athletic events will take place.

We were told by the Council that our allotments were safe, and would not be part of the re-development of the area around the Stadium.

This no longer seems to be the case.

We have heard that the Council are now looking at the site that includes the land occupied by the allotments.

As you can imagine, this is our worst nightmare.

Obviously we are going to fight this. Letters have been written and meetings held. Site visits by the Director of the games, and the Leader of the City Council are being arranged.

Our allotments are seen by many as one of the best in the country. We have 121 plots and plot holders from 16 different countries. All the plots are taken. We have appeared in many television programmes, in books and in magazines. Children from a special needs school visit regularly. We have raised over 14k from our Summer Fairs, all for charity. I have raised 6k for the Lymphoma Association from the sale of plants.

We are self-managed by a committee so don't cost the council anything. We all give our time freely, and love what we do.

But the most upsetting thing for me is..............the cats. They have such a good life with us with freedom to wander around the site. How would they cope with being house-cats, and who would take them? Of course, I will take some, but I doubt if I could cope with all seven.

I'm hoping against hope that the Council will change its mind and leave us alone. I will keep you updated

We are starting a petition, I will post details soon.

It might be worthwhile making the post with the change.org petition public so that you don't have to be in the group to get to the link
