  • Advice on new compost bin....

    Afternoon fellow grapes

I have been given a compost bin, but i need some advice, i need to know if it can smell ( i dont want to place it near the BBQ if it does) and does it attract rats? i rent my house and my neighbour is also a keen veggie grower and we get on but i dont want to start causing any problems, any advice would be appreciated.

I have several bins which have lids and providing that you put only raw veg matter into them you should have no problems with rats or smell. If it starts to smell this can be that it is too wet but rarely happens in plastic bins (which I assume is what you have).

Suggestion, put some twiggy bits at the bottom before you start to help the air circulate

Lynda, you probably need more brown in with all that poo and wee (shredded or scrunched newspaper is good).
              Then it shouldn't smell.

Mice & rats will nest inside Daleks if they are dry, so water them (wee is good, and speeds up the composting process too).
